USE OF 2-PROPANOL IN THE RESTORATION OF FRESCOES.Hannah Ross and Sophia Ganapes. This lab is an attempt to determine the effectiveness of 2-propanol alcohol in the restoration of frescoes. It has been previously found that a mixture of calcium hydroxide and 1-propanol has worked, which leads to the question of if all isopropyl alcohols would be effective. 2-propanol was chosen for its availability. The three types of damage were physical, water damage and acid rain, each of which was simulated in lab. By testing a mixture of 2-propanol and calcium hydroxide at the same proportions of the effective solution on a variety of damaged frescoes, .25 g of Ca(OH)2 to every 40 mL of 2-propanol, the similarities and differences of the alcohols in respect to restoration of frescoes is explored.
